Social Media Manager

Position Summary

Oversees the operational planning, establishment, execution and evaluation of ongoing and sustainable social media communications. Produces relevant content for various social media sites for targeted audiences. Oversees and provides leadership to staff contributing to content production. Ensures all online venues are updated and maintained consistently to maintain positive online presence. Educates and trains UNM community on proper use of social media and online communications. Serves as the subject matter expert on social media and online content management.

The University of New Mexico’s Communication & Marketing (UCAM) Department is seeking an energetic and engaging Social Media Manager. The Social Media Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operation of UNM’s various social media profiles. In addition to monitoring and responding to posts, comments, messages, etc., this individual will be tasked with the creation of engaging content that will represent the University and promote participation and involvement.

The Social Media Manager leads our student blogging platform, The Pack, as well as authoring stories for our UNMProud series to promote exceptional Lobos. This position will supervise our student Social Media Coordinators and student bloggers. This position will require an in-depth awareness of activities on campus to both promote and cover various events. This individual leads the UNM Social Media User Group (SMUG) and functions as an advisor to other campus entities engaging in social media on behalf of the University.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Build and manage UNM’s social media profiles and presence, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Snapchat, and other social media platforms.
  • Manage daily content and update weekly content calendar for all social channels
  • Monitor, listen and engage in social media discussions about UNM, and moderate as needed.
  • Develop and implement a social media strategy with appropriate metrics.
  • Follow trends in social media to stay current on changes and new approaches. Evaluate new platforms and determine viability for use.
  • Increase engagement and build conversations around the University and our content with multiple audiences of prospective and current students, alumni, faculty and staff, the media, government officials and others interested parties.
  • Evaluate social media analytics and generate reports to track growth and engagement.
  • Work with UCAM’s Marketing and Communications teams, as well as the cross-campus community, to promote the University.
  • Hire, supervise, mentor, and edit work of student interns who will help produce content.
  • Serve as a social media advisor for campus and manage the SMUG, a cross campus social media users group.
  • Support University-wide Crisis Communications via social media platforms. (FEMA training required)
  • Collaborate with Enrollment Management marketing staff member to produce recruitment centric communications & posts

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Expert knowledge of established social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, LinkedIn, etc.) and emerging social media channels. An ability to know what may engage prospective students and what channels may be best for parents and other University constituents.
  • A strong understanding of Facebook's business manager platform.
  • A strong understanding of the difference between organic and paid social activity, and how to leverage them together.
  • Experience working with social media dashboards, listening and monitoring tools (Hootsuite, Sprout Social, etc.).
  • Self-starter and creative, innovative thinker who can contribute out-of-the-box ideas and strategies.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills with an ability to adapt voice and tone to varying audiences. Must show flexibility in writing styles, including professional voice and creative approach to social media content.
  • Proven professional experience managing multiple social media sites and communities for higher education, business, political or other clients with measurable success.
  • Exceptional communication skills, verbal, written and visual.
  • Working knowledge of Photoshop and Illustrator.
  • Basic web design experience with HTML and CSS.
  • Experience working with WordPress.
  • Strong photography skills with the ability to use DSLR cameras.
  • Strong skills with digital video editing using Adobe Premiere
  • Experience with video production and digital video editing using Adobe Premiere.
  • Experience with live streaming services and technology.
