Position Summary

Under limited supervision, represents the University to external media sources as the official University spokesperson and provides high-level communications on behalf of executive leadership. Executes a variety of institutional-wide communication and media relations initiatives designed to enhance the University's ties to its internal and external constituents. Produces and disseminates information in accordance to University goals, objectives, and priorities, and under the direction of the Chief University Marketing and Communications Officer. Works in a collaborative environment to provide accurate information on sensitive, confidential, and high-impact issues to the institution.

University Communication and Marketing (UCAM) is The University of New Mexico’s lead office for communications, marketing and web communications. We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Media Relations Officer to support the successful interface between the University and the news media, as well as contribute to telling the UNM story. 

Reporting to the Chief Marketing & Communications Officer, this position provides primary oversight of UNM media relations. As the media spokesperson for UNM, the Media Relations Officer is responsible for building trust-driven relationships with members of UNM community, as well as cultivating and managing relationships with members of the media. 

The primary responsibilities include: responding to and managing press inquiries in timely and accurate manner; detecting public relations issues as they emerge and addressing them directly; managing media communications in emergency situations and playing a key role in crisis communication planning; working collaboratively with UCAM staff and other communications professionals at UNM to develop media strategies that includes proactive media outreach and reactive response tactics across a wide variety of digital and traditional media entities; planning and overseeing press events; arranging for media interviews with key UNM administrators, faculty and staff; and researching and writing briefing materials. 

The successful candidate will have the following skills and qualifications: demonstrated passion for and understanding of UNM’s mission, culture and values; a track record, ideally five (5) years, of successful media response and outreach experience, including high-level placements and strong existing relationships, especially with New Mexico media; media relations experience in higher education and/or similar institutional organization; demonstrated ability to act and effectively respond quickly online or through media contacts to current issues related to the University; demonstrated experience managing crisis communications (FEMA PIO training and experience preferred); excellent writing and editing skills for a variety of media channels; strong self-organization, planning, and time management skills; and the ability to operate both independently and as a part of the UCAM team.

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or other related field; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirements may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

1.   Demonstrated experience in and familiarity with public higher education of comparable institution.

2.   Demonstrated experience in managing communications during crisis situations. 

3.   Demonstrated experience in fostering long-term positive relationships with local, statewide and national media. 

4.   Demonstrated experience in fostering long-term positive community relationships.

5.   Demonstrated experience writing executive communications for internal and external audiences.

6.   Demonstrated understanding of current media technology trends in communication.
