The Division of Acute Care Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of New Mexico is recruiting an Acute Care Surgeon.  The University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH) is the primary affiliate of the UNM School of Medicine and the state's only American College of Surgeons verified Level 1 Trauma center. The UNMH serves as the major referral center for tertiary and quaternary care in New Mexico serving a population of 1.2 million people. UNMH has extensive experience and expertise in managing complex surgical patients and critically injured trauma patients. UNM Health Science Center (UNMHSC) is one of only 29 institutions nationally that has both an NIH (NCI) designated Cancer Center (Comprehensive Cancer Center) and a NIH sponsored Clinical Translational Science Center. UNMH has 629 beds for adult, pediatric and psychiatric care. There are 100,000 ED visits and almost 3000 trauma admissions (1,200 at the highest activation level, with >20% penetrating trauma) annually. This position is being recruited at the open rank and open track level.

The UNM Division of Acute Care Surgery consists of ten Acute Care surgeons covering all facets of Acute Care Surgery: Trauma, Emergency General Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care.  We have a Surgical Critical Care fellowship with expertise in ECMO and ultrasound as well as an Acute Care Surgery Fellowship certified by the AAST.

Perhaps best known for the annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta and as the setting for AMC's hit show "Breaking Bad," Albuquerque, New Mexico, is a culturally rich and naturally beautiful metropolitan area. New Mexico is the home of two national laboratories, Sandia and Los Alamos. Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque houses the Phillips Research Site, and the Santa Fe Institute focuses on cutting edge research.  Year-round good weather and easy access to the outdoors (the Sandia mountain wilderness is 20 minutes from UNM) make Albuquerque an incredible area for outdoor enthusiasts.
