Translator/Interpreter

Position Summary

The UNM Early Childhood Services Center (ECSC), is seeking for a full-time Spanish/English translator/interpreter. Under general supervision, the interested individual will translate documents and other material from Spanish to English; and/or translates spoken passages from one language to another during seminars, symposia, teleconferences, and/or meetings. Expresses either approximate or exact translation, depending upon the nature of the occasion.

 This position will collaborate closely with ECSC’s Professional Development Team and the Instruction Development Team to identify the needs for both face-to-face and online trainings. It will involve engaging in discussions with Subject Matter Experts to consider which videos, articles, games, or songs may need updating for the Spanish version of the trainings. Additionally, there will be opportunities to discuss concepts and content for both online and face-to-face trainings.

 Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Reads and rewrites learner guides, handouts, videos, following established rules pertaining to factors such as word meanings, sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and mechanics.
  • Reviews translated facilitator and learner manuals that will be used by professional development facilitators and students.
  • Translates handouts and other documents into Spanish.
  • Sends approved translated documents to appropriate contacts within ECSC.
  • Edits handouts, manuals, and document formats in both English and Spanish
  • Serves as interpreter at meetings and trainings providing consecutive or simultaneous translation between both languages.
  • Listens to complete statements in one language, translates to second, and translates responses from second into first language; expresses either approximate or exact translation, depending on nature of occasion.
  • In simultaneous interpreting, renders oral translation of material at time it is being spoken.
  • Receives briefing or prepares through reading and study on subject to be discussed prior to interpreting session.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

In simultaneous interpreting, renders oral translation of material at time it is being spoken.

  • Receives briefing or prepares through reading and study on subject to be discussed prior to interpreting session.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  • Training or certification in professional translation/interpretation
  • Previous professional work experience in translation/interpretation
  • Early Childhood language and terminology
  • Bilingual Endorsement or licensure

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Fluency in Spanish and English.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Spanish written translation skills.
  • Listening skills.
  • Technical writing skills.
