Position Summary

The Department of Speech & Hearing Sciences at the University of New Mexico is conducting a search for an Assistant Professor. This is a 9-month, tenure-track appointment, with a preferred start date of August 1, 2025. Responsibilities include conducting a research program consistent with the candidate’s area of expertise, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, mentoring students, and performing service duties. This is a probationary appointment leading to a tenure decision.

UNM is located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Albuquerque is an eclectic, medium-sized city that enjoys many of the advantages of urban life and is full of cultural richness and creativity. It provides a low cost of living in a beautiful desert and mountain biome. UNM holds a “Highest Research Activity” Carnegie Classification, includes a research and teaching hospital, and is a Hispanic-Serving Institution. The department has a collegial relationship with a wide array of community-based organizations including schools, hospitals and rehab centers.  Senior faculty within the department provide mentoring to maximize research success.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Anticipated completion of doctorate before start date (August 1, 2025) in Communication Sciences and Disorders or a related field.
  • Qualifications to teach communication disorders courses as specified by CAA accreditation standards.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellence in both research and teaching in line with the goals of the department.
  • All areas of expertise will be considered (e.g. AAC, aphasia, cognition, developmental disorders, developmental speech or language, dysphagia, phonological, stuttering) but preference will be given for motor speech disorders and bi/multilingualism.
  • Speech-language pathology or related clinical experience.
  • Evidence of research and teaching approaches that demonstrate cultural responsivity.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
