Position Summary

The Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) is seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented, results-driven, recognized leader in social network analysis, program evaluation, and data analytics to join our team as a short-term on-call Senior Research Scientist 3. The mission of the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) is to advance innovation and discovery. The core of this mission is the research, scholarship, and creative works of UNM faculty. The OVPR seeks to facilitate these activities, resulting in new knowledge and applications of value to our communities, New Mexico, and the world.

As a member of the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR), the successful candidate will make authoritative decisions and recommendations that have a major impact on extensive scientific research activities at UNM, including the Grand Challenges Program, and Faculty Research Development.

Additionally, the successful candidate will be primarily responsible for:

  • Performing evaluation of the Grand Challenges program through collaboratively designing and administering a temporal social network survey that includes several attributes (e.g., rank, affiliation, primary field of study). 
  • Analyzing resulting data and providing team-specific information to the OVPR regarding team progress and program effectiveness.
  • Providing training in Social Network Analysis and program evaluation for members of the OVPR staff, primarily within the Faculty Research Development Office (FRDO) and the Grand Challenges Director.
  • Working with UNM researchers to design and implement a comprehensive, mixed-methods research study of convergent research in the context of the Grand Challenges Program, specifically focused on the structures and tools that the Grand Challenges Level 1 Concept Teams use to develop their teams and perform convergent research.
  • Creating presentations for internal and external audiences and produce manuscripts for publication in the peer-reviewed literature.
  • Utilizing historic research data to develop an appropriate approach to addressing needs for a research analytics program at UNM; working with the FRDO as well as the Office of Institutional Analytics (OIA) to recommend a set of metrics that would be the most appropriate to use for strategic decision making and tracking of success for the research enterprise at UNM.

Conditions of Employment
  • National certification specific to the field of research may be required in some cases.
  • Successful candidate must submit to a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check. Additional health screenings may be required, dependent on the nature of the research conducted, as determined by Employee Occupational Health Services.
Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree; at least 9 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Background and education in science facilitation and social sciences research.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the science of team science, including hands-on experience in working with interdisciplinary teams to enhance productivity and promote success through facilitation of convergent research across a wide range of disciplines.
  • Demonstrated expertise in social network analysis as well as mixed methods research (i.e., survey tools, focus groups, quantitative measures, case studies, etc.), especially as utilized in program evaluation.
  • Strong publication record in the peer-reviewed literature.
  • Understanding of the importance of research analytics, both inputs and outcomes (e.g., proposals, awards, PIs, peer-reviewed papers) and tools for graphical representation of data across multiple variables.
  • Strong technical software skills, especially in the context of electronic platforms for research analytics, spreadsheets, data visualization software, etc.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills as well as organizational skills
    outstanding novelty and/or importance.
