Gallery Manager,Tamarind

Position Summary

The Tamarind Institute is seeking a detail-oriented individual who can work under limited supervision to oversee the business operations of the gallery, including management of all aspects of print sales.  This position will work with marketing staff and the Director to implement and evaluate marketing strategies and expand the client base to reach quarterly sales goals.  Oversee planning and execution of art fairs, receptions and other sales activities to cultivate new and existing clients.  Coordinates invoicing and shipping for all print sales, and maintains communication with clients.  Coordinates gallery schedule for 3 - 4 exhibitions annually and develops exhibitions and programs featuring Tamarind prints and Tamarind artists. Provides instruction to student printers and work-study students about best gallery practices.  Participates in print publishing decisions with Tamarind's Master Printer and Director.

Duties and Responsibilities:

-Respond to all print inquiries and prepare materials for clients

-Track sales figures and work with Director to reach annual sales targets

-Keep current information on collectors, museum collections and gallery representation and maintain regular communication with clients

-Stay current on contemporary artists and market trends and make publishing and pricing recommendations to Director.

-Develop and expand collector base by cultivating new contacts

-Participate in marketing strategies for expanding collector base and develop targeted audiences for print editions.

-Plan, develop and organize regular participation in art fairs

-Oversee all gallery functions, including, but not limited to, maintaining database sales records, artist information, gallery installations, frame storage and lighting

-Develop pricing and sales policies in consultation with Director

-Write and oversee the production of educational materials, including gallery materials and artist profiles

-Represent Tamarind at various community, national and international events to promote the program

-Presents public programs, including gallery talks and visitor tours

-Manage gallery space and greets visitor

-Oversee gallery personnel, primarily work study students and volunteers, including scheduling, training, enforcement of internal procedures and problem resolution

-Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Some travel required, including 3 - 4 art fairs every year.

Tuesday through Saturday weekly work schedule with some flexibility, as some evenings are required for events.

Knowledge of art handling and conservation framing.

Ability to cultivate and maintain strong working relationships with artists, gallerists and clients.

Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management.

Strong writing skills, and an ability to create, compose and edit written gallery materials.

Familiarity with common software programs and database use.
