Position Summary

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of New Mexico is searching for a full-time Sr. Research Scientist 2. This position requires a background in physics or a closely related field. The Sr. Research Scientist 2 will be responsible for providing technical support in upper division undergraduate/graduate physics laboratory classes including Electronics, Junior, Senior, and Optics labs, and maintenance of equipment including computers and general lab equipment. The individual will also participate in the development of new experiments across these laboratories and chair the upper division undergraduate/graduate lab committee. Other areas of responsibilities include oversight and management of a small spectroscopy lab and our electronics and machine shops and their staff, technical oversight and support of our Campus Observatory, and maintenance of audio-video equipment. The individual also serves as the instructor of record for the summer session introductory physics and astronomy labs. In addition, this individual is expected to teach short courses including lab safety, and occasionally teach lab courses, as needed.

Conditions of Employment
  • Successful candidate must submit to a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check. Additional health screenings may be required, dependent on the nature of the research conducted, as determined by Employee Occupational Health Services.
Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

·        Ph.D. in Physics or Astrophysics or closely related field

·        Experience in electronics, instrumentation, data acquisition systems, and computer interfacing

·        Ability and interest in teaching and developing upper division undergraduate/graduate physics labs

·        Ability and interest in working with students

·        Managerial and supervisory experience

·        Familiarity with optical telescopes
