as outlined in UBPPM #3200, Employee Classifications, http://policy.unm.edu/university-policies/3000/3200.html **POSITION WILL BE LOCATED FULL-TIME IN THE PHOENIX, ARIZONA AREA** The
Division of Nephrology, within the Department of Internal Medicine, is
seeking a full-time candidate, who is a detail-oriented and results-driven
individual, to join our team as a Community-Based Research Specialist for a
new and unique opportunity. The University of New Mexico has recently been
awarded a 5-year grant from the National Institutes of Health to study kidney
disease in Native Americans in New Mexico and Arizona. As part of this study,
500 Native Americans will be recruited to participate in the study, including
200 Native Americans from the Phoenix, Arizona urban area including from the
town of Guadalupe. This position will be based at the Clinical Research
Branch of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney
Diseases located in Phoenix, Arizona. The position will oversee patient
recruitment, participation, and retention at that site. In
general, the ideal candidate for the Community-Based Research Specialist
position will have experience coordinating clinical research with Native
American communities. This includes completing IRB submissions (local and
external), patient recruitment and retention, and data and specimen
collection and maintenance. This candidate will also have a firm
understanding of good clinical practices in conducting research, strong
interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively
with a variety of University and community stakeholders. The stakeholders
might include health care providers, funding agencies, university and federal
researchers, and patients. The
ideal candidate will exhibit the following characteristics: - Ability to effectively adapt to changing priorities.
- Ability to effectively recruit and enroll participants in to the clinical
trial.
- Ability to effectively multitask.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Specific
duties will include:
- Recruitment, enrollment, and scheduling of
research subjects. Maintaining record keeping systems and procedures.
Performing study visits with patients.
- Collecting,
logging and entering research data in accordance to protocol and procedural.
- Coordinates
and facilitates development and submission of local IRB applications for the
conduct of biomedical and/or other federally regulated life sciences research
studies, in accordance with all relevant Federal and State regulations and
guidelines.
- Collecting,
logging, processing, and shipping blood and urine samples.
AI-CRIC
- SPECIFIC: - Coordinates implementation and execution of
study protocol, and oversees all aspects of the provision of patient care to
participants, in compliance with protocol requirements.
- Contribute
to the development and implementation of protocols, procedures and
techniques.
- Recruit,
evaluate and instruct clinical research subjects and volunteers.
- Develop
logistics and design flow sheet.
- Will
interact regularly with faculty and clinical staff regarding the individual
project(s) and provide reporting as required.
- Complete
start up initiatives as required by the individual project(s).
- Make
sure grants are executed within confines of the FDA and sponsor requirements.
- Assist
with IRB submissions.
AI-CRIC
Phoenix SITE SPECIFIC: - Population engagement: Engagement with the community is important to the success of the AI-CRIC study in Phoenix. In addition to the study elements aimed, engaging with community leadership prior to the launch of the study at the Phoenix site is essential. Working with the NIH Tribal Health Research Office and community leadership including the mayor of Guadalupe, Arizona, representatives of the Inter-Tribal Council of Arizona and leadership of the Pascua Yaqui tribe.

- Obtaining identifiable private information about living individuals
- Obtaining the voluntary informed consent of individuals to be subjects
- Makes decisions about subject eligibility
- Studying, interpreting, or analyzing identifiable (including coded/linked with access to the code key) data/specimens for research purposes
