THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO seeks applications for an Assistant Professor in the History of Native America with an anticipated start date of August 2019. The position is probationary leading to a tenure decision. The University of New Mexico, located in Albuquerque, is New Mexico’s flagship institution. It is a “very high activity” Carnegie Research University, a Minority-serving institution, and a Hispanic-serving institution. The History Department features strong interconnected teaching and graduate programs on the U.S. West, United States, and Latin America. UNM is also a member of the Newberry Consortium in American Indian Studies. We seek a scholar who demonstrates a commitment to historical research on Native America, who can offer undergraduate and graduate courses in Native American history, and who is prepared to take an active role in mentoring PhD and master’s students in a graduate program with a long tradition of training scholars in the field. Duties include teaching courses in the program per semester. The successful candidate will hold the PhD in History or related discipline with significant training in Native American history. The degree must be awarded by the date of appointment. The candidate will demonstrate the qualifications summarized below:
Minimum qualification: (1) PhD in History or a related discipline with significant training in Native American history, with degree awarded by the date of appointment.
Preferred qualifications: (1) a record of publication or commitment to publish within the field of Native American History as demonstrated by CV, cover letter, letters of recommendation, and writing sample; (2) teaching experience at the university or college level including ability to teach upper-division courses in Native American history and lower-division survey courses as demonstrated by some or all of the following: sample syllabi, classroom experience, letters of recommendation, cover letter, and teaching evaluations; (3) interest in mentoring undergraduates and graduate students at the master’s and PhD levels as demonstrated by CV, cover letter, and letters of recommendation; and (4) commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, and ability to work with broadly diverse communities as demonstrated by CV, cover letter, letters of recommendation, sample syllabi, list of courses, and teaching evaluations.
