Position Summary

The Department of Chemistry & Chemical Biology is seeking an Accountant 1 to join our high performing-dynamic team. We are looking for a knowledgeable, detail-oriented, problem-solving individual with excellent customer service skills. The Department currently has 14 tenure-track faculty who have a large research portfolio. This position will lead the accountant duties in the department with support from a Fiscal Services Tech and will closely work with the College of Arts & Sciences fiscal team.

The candidate who is selected for this position must be flexible and adaptive to a variety of customers and responsive to needs of the faculty, staff and students. Other important skills include: leadership, problem solving, and a natural curiosity to follow issues to the end. 

This individual will perform advanced multifaceted accounting and related functions such as reviewing and analyzing budgets, monitoring expenditures, and ensuring expenditure control. They will perform financial analysis, budget projections and account reconciliations.  The Accountant 1 will be responsible for analyzing complex financial data, preparing reports, overseeing payroll and other accounting transactions. This position is responsible for overseeing approximately 20 restricted indices.

Conditions of Employment
  • If this position is assigned to the Athletics Department, either administratively or functionally, compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations is required.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and successful completion of at least 9 credit hours of university-level accounting through intermediate accounting; no previous experience required.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferences:

  • current or previous work at UNM or in a university setting

  • comfortable working with a variety of faculty with varies requests

  • proficient using Microsoft Excel and Word software

  • proficient using MyReports or similar reporting system

  • experience using UNM Salary and Budget Planner

  • understanding the policies and procedures of both restricted and unrestricted budgets

  • processing JV’s and salary corrections

  • experience with the lifecyle of grant (restricted) accounting
