Position Summary
The Barron cosmology group in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at UNM is searching for a Research Scientist II to support the analysis of CMB datasets and assist with designing, testing, and deploying related instrumentation.
The successful candidate will work with UNM faculty and students to contribute to the analysis of time-ordered telescope and atmospheric/remote-sensing data to help mitigate noise in ground-based millimeter-wave observations.

Conditions of Employment
  • Successful candidate must submit to a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check. Additional health screenings may be required, dependent on the nature of the research conducted, as determined by Employee Occupational Health Services.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience analyzing time-ordered telescope data
  • Experience with satellite-borne remote sensing data (e.g., GOES, VIIRS, MODIS)
  • Experience applying machine learning techniques (e.g., convolutional neural networks) to scientific datasets
  • Proficiency in Python for data analysis, instrument characterization, and dashboard/visualization development
  • Experience with Linux operating systems
  • Knowledge of device interfaces and low-level instrument readout
  • Skill in the use of routine laboratory equipment (e.g., oscilloscopes, DC power supplies, scanning stages)
  • Ability to read schematics and technical manuals
  • Knowledge of engineering, science, and mathematics fundamentals relevant to millimeter-wave instrumentation
  • Ability to interact with students, faculty, and/or staff in a team environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, including contributing to publications and conference presentations
